Routes into Teaching
Poole is proud to offer exciting opportunities for teachers at every stage in their career. Our growing community of schools provides a supportive and diverse environment in which students and their teachers can thrive.
Our mission is to provide a model of excellence which helps children and young people to fulfil their potential in every way.
For those graduates who wish to enter the profession, and train to teach, our SCITTs and Teaching Schools offer excellent courses including School Direct, in order to attain your PGCE and QTS through:
- Poole Teaching School Alliance (teaching age 3-11 years)
- Poole SCITT (teaching age 4-11 years)
- Wessex Schools Training Partnership SCITT (teaching age 11-18 years)
Prior to the start of training, our local providers will support or organise School Experience Days and some schools offer employment as Teaching Assistants and Cover Supervisors where appropriate. The training providers will offer advice and support on meeting subject knowledge requirements and information on the various routes into teaching that are available in Poole. This includes the ‘Return to Teaching’ programme for those who already have their QTS.
This robust entry into teaching, as well as the excellent facilities offered to those living and working in Poole, means that retention of teachers is high and many teachers enjoy and develop successful careers in local schools.
Since 2014, when the School Direct programme was launched by Poole Teaching School Alliance, 100% of graduates have secured teaching posts.
WSTP has achieved 100% success in finding employment for its secondary trainees in the last three years and, as a result, was commended by Ofsted.
Similarly, 100% of graduates from Poole SCITT over the previous 4 years have successfully gained teaching posts within the academic year that they trained, the vast majority within our local schools. The 2014 Ofsted inspection graded Poole SCITT as outstanding in every category.
