A variety of support staff work in schools locally to support teaching and learning in the classroom. These include Learning Mentors, Pastoral Care Workers, Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSAs), Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) to provide group and individual support.
In Poole we know how important this support is to teaching and learning, and actively support a range of training opportunities.
For teaching assistants who want to develop their knowledge and practice further, the training and assessment of Higher Level Teaching Assistants has been offered in the region since 2004 by HLTA Community South West. Teaching Assistants have used this route to enhance their career progression through gaining HLTA status and others as a means to then go on to gain a teaching qualification.
From September 2017, Poole Teaching School Alliance is working with The Learning Institute to offer opportunities for colleagues working in schools to study for a Foundation Degree or Top Up Degree whilst continuing to earn. This provides those working with children in our local schools to further develop their career and achieve the qualifications required to explore routes into teaching, alongside other career pathways. Many Poole schools support their staff to access this study whilst working in a school.
